GOAT debate: Why I feel sorry for Ronaldo over Messi rivalry – Carragher

Liverpool legend, Jamie Carragher, has given a reason why he feels sorry for Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo for having to deal with repeated comparisons to Argentina captain Lionel Messi throughout his football career.

It goes without saying that the GOAT (Greatest Of All Time) debate between the two forwards has taken a different course following Argentina’s triumph at the recently concluded 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Messi, at the moment, not only has the edge but has solidified his stance as the GOAT.

Ronaldo, on the other hand, has been painted as a villain for failing to win the FIFA World Cup with Portugal.

This has done some harm to the former Manchester United forward’s reputation in recent days, and Carragher can’t help but show sympathy for the 37-year-old.

“I am no huge [Cristiano] Ronaldo fan, I think that is pretty obvious, but it’s sad for him the way that people are now speaking about him and Messi in very different ways,” Carragher said on Steven Bartlett’s Diary of a CEO podcast.

“There is this idea that Ronaldo was all about himself and his ego, whereas Messi is painted as this kind of saint figure.

“I don’t actually think that is true. People are saying he [Ronaldo] isn’t the same player, but who is at 37?”
